Boston is not only known for its huge sport portfolio but also for its global music culture. The Music of Massachusetts has developed actively since it was first colonized by Britain. Especially Boston is a large part of the US presented music scene, which includes several genres of Rock, Classic, Jazz, Folk, and Hip-Hop music. And of course, Massachusetts is home to several formal ensembles such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
But today, we will put our focus on classical music.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra

The BSO is one of the five major American symphony orchestras. Founded in 1881, the BSO plays most of its concerts at Boston's Symphony Hall. The Hall is long, narrow, and high, in a rectangular shoebox shape. It is 18.6m high, 22.9m wide, and 38.1m long from the lower back wall to the front of the stage. Except for its wooden floors, the Hall is built of brick, steel, and plaster, surrounded by modest decoration. What is special about this rectangular shoebox shape is that the side balconies are very shallow to avoid trapping and muffling sound, and the coffered ceiling and statue-filled niches along three sides help provide excellent acoustics to every seat.

I had the chance to join a symphony concert by the guest conductor Gustavo Gimeno and the three-time Grammy Award-winning violinist Hilary Hahn at the BOS. It was one of the most wonderful concerts I’ve ever enjoyed. The conduction and interpretation of Liget, Dvořák and Schumann were outstanding. The composition of violins, flutes, drums, clarinets, and trumpets were tremendous. Gustavo Gimeno knows how to convince the audience with temperament and charisma. He accompanies his audience through an inspiring journey full of misterio sentiments combined with raise deep feeling of rest and peace.

Attending this concert made me more aware of the diversity of style and compositional techniques inherent in classical music. I particularly enjoyed Gimeno’s mastery of orchestration, as he is able to combine the different sounds of the orchestra in an effective manner. The way he showed the dialogue between soloist and orchestra heightened the dramatic tension in the piece.

Much of the success of this music lay in the faithful rendering of the performance. In this respect, Gustavo Gimeno and the Boston Symphony Orchestra were able to bring out the spirit of Ligeti’s, Dvořák’s and Schumann’s music.

If you need a break and want to dive into the world of classical music, I strongly recommend the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

With love from Boston,
Sibel
